Rosalie Ham's award-winning Australian gothic novel coming to screen, co-starring Judy Davis as Winslet's mother
Kate Winslet will play an Australian woman who returns to the small outback town where she grew up with revenge on her mind, in the comedy-tinged period drama The Dressmaker, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Described by writer-director Jocelyn Moorhouse as "Unforgiven with a sewing machine", the film's story sees talented couturier Tilly Dunnage arrive back in the land of her birth after many years in Europe. Having left Australia as a child after being accused of murder, she now wants to make amends with her eccentric mother Molly, but first must unravel the secrets of her past.
Based on Rosalie Ham's award-winning novel set in the 1950s, described as an "Australian gothic novel of love, hate and haute-couture", the film also stars Australian two-time Oscar nominee Judy Davis as Molly.
"This is a project with rich, complex characters and an indelible Australian setting. Jocelyn is the perfect film-maker to bring Rosalie Ham's book to screens throughout the world," said producer Sue Maslin. "The incredible assembly of talent in front of and behind the camera is testimony to the ambition of everyone involved to make a great film. We look forward to working with Universal Pictures to bring this project to Australian audiences."
