Beijing airport explosion caused by man in wheelchair

Chinese state media reports that suspect was injured after detonating an apparently homemade device

A man in a wheelchair has been injured after setting off an explosion at Beijing's international airport, Chinese state media has reported.

The man detonated an apparently homemade device near one of the exists in Terminal 3 of the airport at around 6.24pm local time, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

No one besides the man was injured and order has been restored. The news agency showed several medical workers providing emergency treatment, with police officers also at the scene.

Photos posted on China's Weibo microblogging site showed a dark-haired man waving a white package in the air before the blast.

Later images showed the wheelchair on its side with officials treating a man on the floor.
