Briton Reece Elliott sentenced to 28 months for messages that resulted in lockdown of schools in Warren County, Tennessee

A British man who posted offensive messages on Facebook and sparked a security crackdown when he threatened to kill 200 US schoolchildren has been jailed for two years and four months.

Reece Elliott, 24, was sentenced at Newcastle crown court after admitting making threats to kill and communications offences.

In February, he left cruel messages on tribute pages set up for two American teenagers who had died in road accidents.

When challenged, the father-of-one, from Fossway, South Shields, sent unpleasant private messages to Facebook users.

One 15-year-old girl, whose identity cannot be reported due to her age, was told: "You have been chosen tomorrow at school to receive one of my bullets."

Schools in Warren County, Tennessee, went into lockdown after Elliott posted threats to kill 200 children. Almost 3,000 pupils missed school the day after the postings were made.

Judge James Goss QC, the recorder of Newcastle, told Elliott the offences were driven by "no more than self-indulgent nastiness".

The judge took into account Elliott's early guilty plea and genuine remorse in passing a sentence of 28 months.
